Comments

Each comment comes with the details entered in the comment form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string, which we use to detect spam.

We may pass Gravatar a hash of your email address (a scrambled, anonymous version of it) to check whether you have an account there. If you want to know how Gravatar handles that information, its privacy policy is at https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once a comment is approved, your profile picture shows publicly beside it.

Media

Before uploading photos, please clear any location data (EXIF GPS) stored in them. Site visitors are able to download pictures posted here and extract whatever location is saved inside.

Cookies

Commenters can opt in to having their name, email address and website saved in cookies, so a later comment does not mean typing them all over again. Those cookies are kept for one year.

A visit to our login page sets a temporary cookie that checks if your browser allows cookies. It stores no personal data and is deleted when the browser closes.

Signing in sets several more cookies, which hold your login details and your screen display settings. We keep login cookies for two days and screen option cookies for one year. Choosing “Remember Me” stretches your login to two weeks. Logging out clears the login cookies.

Your browser gets one extra cookie whenever you publish or edit an article. It carries no personal data, only the post ID of the article you edited, and is gone after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Pages on this site can contain embedded material such as videos, images or articles from elsewhere. That material acts exactly as though you had gone to the website it comes from.

The original website may gather data on you, set cookies, load extra third-party trackers and follow how you interact with its embedded material. That also applies when you have an account on that site and are logged in.

Who we share your data with

A password reset email will contain the IP address the request came from.

How long we retain your data

We keep every comment, along with its metadata, for an unlimited time. That lets the system spot your later comments and approve them right away rather than sending them to moderation.

Where registration is available, we also save the personal information people enter in their user profile. Each user can view, update or remove that information whenever they like, except for the username, which stays fixed. Our website administrators have access to view and edit it as well.

What rights you have over your data

Have an account here or posted a comment? You may ask for a file containing the personal data we store about you, including whatever you supplied yourself. You may also ask us to wipe that data, apart from anything we are required to retain for administrative, legal or security purposes.
